Well, in case you haven't heard, yours truly is the newest member of the Public Affairs team for the Mississippi Department of Transportation. It's been a long road, but the result is a good one.
One thing I love about public relations is learning new information about things I already knew. Transportation is a perfect example. Since coming on board, I've learned about traffic patterns, Jas N Smithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12769363271940285353noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7872369036067821108.post-59445234686167401582017-05-09T14:20:00.000-07:002023-12-14T10:05:38.377-08:00Jas N Smith - School PR Pro & Communications Strategist

Bill Minor died this morning. He chronicled some of the uglier parts of Mississippi's history for the last half of the Twentieth Century.
I had the privilege of meeting him one afternoon when I lived in Jackson. It's no secret that I'm a news junkie and I've read dozens of his columns. He was in the grocery store, and I recognized him but debated whether or not to bother him. I loved that guy. I was lucky to work with him at WLBT in Jackson for a few years. He was just incredible. Anytime I got to be his photographer (which was rare), he would tell the greatest stories. No matter where we went, he had been there and knew a story about it: Floods, trains, Fordice, Elvis, and a million other awesome things. I was treated to a sneak preview of the HHS Forensics production of The Boys Next Door yesterday. To say I was blown away is an understatement. The play focuses on the lives of four men living with mental disabilities in an assisted living facility and their caretaker.

I plan to close the list on Friday (Feb 6), but there are still a few days to get your books in! We will collect all the books, then sort them by age/reading level and go through the librarians' requests and see how many we can fill! I'm pretty dang excited about it! I love reading and love getting to share these books with all of our Jas N Smithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11083792783925901494noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7872369036067821108.post-35491181413925198102015-01-07T14:30:00.004-08:002015-01-07T14:30:58.220-08:00JAS N'S BIRTHDAY BOOK BONANZA
(TL;DR at bottom)So, my birthday’s coming up…and it’s my 40th (I know, I know…I look so good for my age). I would like to use this occasion to ask for your help. In forty years there have been few things I've loved as much as reading! From Choose Your Own Adventures and Encyclopedia Brown to Stephen King's Dark Tower to Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler. In my district I've used social media on a daily basis for years. I compiled a list of the best tips I've learned and advice I've been given so maybe others will be able to get up to speed much faster than I did.
Pick a short username. Seems obvious now, but when I was first starting I wanted to use all sorts of stuff. You want a username that won’t use up a lot of

After attending the NSPRA national seminar for about a decade now
and speaking at state, regional and national conferences and conventions, I
feel like I have a good idea of some of the most important things to do to get
the most out of my time at a conference.
NSPRA has a great conference every year with
speakers and panels on current and emerging trends in the school PR world. I’ve

I originally wrote this post with schools in mind, but the information actually applies to any area of PR. Summer is a great time for taking stock in the effectiveness and success of your program and yourself!
In my role as a PR Director
for a school district, Summer isn’t
the vacation that many other school employees enjoy. I work a 12-month
schedule, but that doesn’t mean my workload

Schools and
districts are often slow to adopt social media. For every district that jumps
in fully and leads the way with integration and innovation, there are dozens
who are happy sitting on the sidelines. The reasons might be different from
admin-to-admin or district-to-district, but I have listed what I have found to
be the 5 most common and why they are wrong.
Let me say that I
